What’s the story behind Montclair Meats?
Montclair Meats started from studying our food supply chain and seeing how flawed the system is. I quit my job on Wall Street to try to make some sort of impact with the short time we have on this planet. The idea is to support a gentler way of farming that is kind to the animals and our planet.
Montclair Meats is a way to bring local, pasture raised, sustainable and ethically raised meats to the consumer. This sounds like a new concept but it’s actually one of our oldest traditions and we are trying to bring that back.
What Are You Most Proud Of?
First, the relationships we built with our customers and their willingness to trust their local butcher and try new and different cuts. Second, the team we’ve built and how quickly they are learning and becoming great leaders.
Do you have any recommendations or tips for visitors?
We are a whole animal butcher shop which means we get the animals whole from small family-owned farms, so items are limited. You only get a certain amounts of cuts from one steer/pig/lamb. If there are cuts that you prefer, just email or call and we can set them aside for you, otherwise there are many different cuts on the animal that are similar to the ones you are looking for. This helps us reduce waste and utilize the whole animal. Lastly, ask questions, we are happy and excited to help you navigate through the meat case!
What do you like best about your community?
Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive. Our customers seem to enjoy what we are providing and other small businesses in the area have been so helpful. We definitely feel the love and hope we can give some of that love back to the community.
