What is Unemployment Insurance? Cash Benefits During Your Job Search

• Unemployment Insurance (UI) is a New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development program that gives financial support to people who lose their jobs or whose work hours are reduced through no fault of their own. 
• Those who meet eligibility requirements may receive benefits for up to 26 weeks during a one-year period. During times of high unemployment, other extended benefit programs may be available. 
• Receive 60% of your average weekly wages, up to a maximum $905/week
• Requires a valid Social Security Number to receive benefits.

Basic Eligibility Requirements:

• You worked in NJ in the last 18 months
• You’re able and available to work
• You’re actively seeking work

Your earnings and how you separated from your employer matter too. Each application will be reviewed for eligibility by The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

If you lost your job because your Temporary Protect Status (TPS) ended, to get unemployment benefits you will need to both show that:

• The wages you are using as the basis for your claim were earned while you were authorized to work in the United States
  AND
• You have a new, current immigration status that allows you to work in the United States.
