Not everyone respects us or our rights. We have a right and responsibility to stand up for ourselves and our neighbors. When we find ourselves confronted by challenges, it’s easy to freeze up or panic, or to stay still and silent because we do not have the tools to respond.
AAPI New Jersey offers in-person and virtual trainings on how to take care of yourself and your community. If you would like to bring one of these trainings to your organization or community, please connect with us by completing the form below.
You’ll learn how your identities can shape your experiences of harassment and the impact that harassment has on you and your community. We’ll take a deep dive into how to build your resilience on an individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and societal front. You’ll leave with new tools on how to respond to harassment, whether your response is in the moment while that harassment is happening or long-term. Choose between:
Hands-On Activity Options
In this training you will learn about the current immigration landscape and its impact on our community. We will teach you your rights, which apply to all individuals regardless of their immigration status. Additionally, we will discuss strategies around community safety. Lastly, we will practice with scenarios based on possible immigration enforcement encounters.
The 60-minute interactive training will teach you Right To Be’s 5Ds of bystander intervention methodology. We’ll start by talking about the types of disrespect that folks are facing right now — from microaggressions to violence — using a tool we call the, “Spectrum of Disrespect.” You’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see anti-Asian/American harassment online or in person.
In this training, you will learn about the heightened political climate of protesting and its impact on our rights. We will learn about our right to protest and what to do if you encounter law enforcement or ICE. We will also learn about community safety in the context of protesting and what safety marshalls are. Additionally, we will learn about strategies to intervene in the event that harassment, hecklers, or counterprotestors are present at a mobilization. Lastly, we will practice with realistic scenarios that you may encounter while protesting.
This interactive workshop introduces students ages 10–17 to the principles of RISE—Recognize, Interrupt, Speak, Empower—a framework designed to help young people build the skills they need to stand up against everyday bias. Participants will learn what microaggressions are, why they’re harmful, and how to handle tough moments with strength and care for themselves. Through real-life examples, open discussion, and a resilience-building activity, students will explore identity, empathy, and practical strategies to support themselves and others. Together, we’ll build the awareness, language, and strength to RISE and create more inclusive communities. Duration is 1 hour 30 min.
AAPI New Jersey, in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development, is offering training to educate and empower workers on their rights and benefits in the workplace. This session will cover critical programs such as Earned Sick Leave and what to do if your worker rights are being violated—resources that are available to all workers, regardless of immigration status.
In 2023, we formally changed our name to AAPI New Jersey to reflect the statewide priorities and activities that this group of committed community members and advocates now supports.
We continue to host events and programs in Montclair and invite you to explore this site to learn more about the diverse resources and opportunities we offer.
